Council's Parking Fine income trebles in 5 years

Hammersmith & Fulham Council's annual revenue from parking fines has nearly trebled in the last 5 years, from £6 million to £17.8 million.

In a recent report in the Evening Standard, it was reported that the Minister for London, Brandon Lewis MP, believes that, "some councils are raising money illegally from parking."

Tony Benn

British politics lost a towering figure, and one of my personal heroes, earlier this week when Tony Benn sadly passed away. Tony was one of the reasons I joined the Labour Party 30 years ago and his legacy will live on for many generations to come. I wrote a tribute to him on the LabourList website, which you can read here.

William Morris Sixth Form

Government education figures have shown that William Morris Sixth Form is one of the top schools in Britain for social mobility.

In 2010 69% of its sixth form pupils who are eligible for free school meals progressed onto higher education. This compares favourably against a British figure of 46%.

These blog posts from the Principal of Newham Sixth Form College give some further background to the figures.

Sixth Form student spends a day with me in Westminster

Two weeks ago I was shadowed by Dervisa Dragnovic, a politics student from William Morris Sixth Form.

Dervisa came with me to an event at the Snowflake School in Earl's Court, sat in on a justice debate and attended an event for young women in politics.

It was excellent having Dervisa spend a day with me, and she will be giving a presentation to her fellow students about her day in Parliament.

Week in Westminster

This week I had the pleasure of voting against the Government’s inhumane and draconian Badger Cull policy. Hundreds of you have written into my office about this and it is clear that public opinion is massively against David Cameron on this one. It is time for him to swallow his pride and end this failing assault on British wildlife.

Tamarind Restaurant

On Thursday I had the pleasure of being invited to open the Tamarind Restaurant on King Street. This is a new restuarant opened by 2009 Indian Chef of the Year, Tipu Rahman. You may also know Mr Rahman as the creator of the world's largest poppadom tower.

All this talk of food gives me another chance to remind you about the Tiffin Cup competition. If you have a nomination then make sure you email in ASAP. Keep your thoughts coming in.

The Upper Room Winter Lectures

The Upper Room in Shepherds Bush is hosting two final lectures as part of their Winter Lecture series.

On the 26th of March, Torin Douglas will be discussing turmoil at the BBC and on the 30th of April I will be talking about the future of Palestine.
