Future of Shepherds Bush Post Office

Shepherds Bush Post Office under threat

Yesterday I was contacted by Post Office Ltd who informed me that they plan to ‘relocate’ the main Crown Post Office on Shepherds Bush Green.

They are consulting on closing and disposing of the current site at 65-69 The Green, and opening a new Office inside WH Smith’s in Westfield some 450m north of the current site.

I'm very concerned to hear about this move, as it follows on from main Post Office closures in Hammersmith and West Kensington, and ‘temporary’ closures of the sub offices in St Ann’s Road and on the BBC Media Village site.

This is the last Post Office in the area in a dedicated building.  It is in an accessible town centre location, and in my experience is always busy.

This would also be a further service gone from the Shepherds Bush Green area, as both Morrisons and HSBC have said that they are to close their local branches.

The consultation runs until 7 December, and I hope a lot of local residents, whether regular or occasional users, will respond.  Here is the link.

Could you also let me know your views?  I will be meeting with Post Office Ltd next week to discuss their plans, and to ask for further details.  For example, they say the same services will be provided by directly-employed staff, but not how many service points or staff there will be.

It would be very helpful if you could send me an e-mail with any thoughts, and also let other local residents know, as in my experience these closures are not well advertised.

This proposal is a retrograde step. The present post office is central, accessible, spacious and well used. Could it be deemed a community asset with protection against change of use something that has been used to protect pubs from being turned into more expensive real estate? The Green is very much a transport hub and this well placed public amenity serves a wide swathe of travelling London’s as well as the immediate community. Sub post offices locally have been extinguished to the detriment of service to the old and less mobile. This main post office should remain.

It would be dreadful for this post office to close. It is right by the bus stop, a great help to people with mobility problems. Not everybody is able (or has the desire!) to wade through thousands of shoppers on an elevated platform involving lifts or escalators to buy a postage stamp!! This is a terrible idea but typical of the kind of thing which happens when profit is put before public service.

The current location of the Shepherds Bush Post Office is easily accessible to the local residence of the area. Not everyone wants a long additional trip to Westfields Shopping Centre and quite frankly they appear to monopolize all our purchasing power.
