Breath of Fresh Air

Andy Slaughter MP is calling for greater efforts to tackle air pollution in Hammersmith.

Air pollution has been under increasing scrutiny recently, due to smog events which covered much of the country and a high profile legal case against the Government by NGO ClientEarth. As a result of the Supreme Court ruling, Ministers must now come up with ambitious ideas to reduce air pollution across the UK.

The health effects of air pollution are substantial and affect us all but in particular the more vulnerable members of our communities such as children, older people and people with heart and respiratory conditions. In Hammersmith and Fulham, experts say 72 people die prematurely each year, due to the effects of air pollution.

Attending an event run by the Healthy Air Campaign last week, Andy Slaughter MP said, “People in Hammersmith know that the environment is one of my biggest passions as an MP. The Healthy Air campaign do a valuable job in highlighting the invisible killer of air pollution.”

Background information

  1. ClientEarth is an environmental law NGO that brings together law, science and policy to create practical solutions to key environmental challenges. As a result of their legal challenge against the UK Government the Supreme Court ruled on the 29th April 2015 that new plans had to be drawn up by the end of 2015 to cut illegal levels of air pollution in the UK. More information about the legal challenge can be found at http://www.clientearth.org/news/press-releases/uk-supreme-court-orders-government-to-take-immediate-action-on-air-pollution-2843
  2. The Healthy Air Campaign (www.healthyair.org.uk) is a coalition of health, transport and environmental charities, including the British Heart Foundation, British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK. The campaign works to raise awareness of the health impacts of air pollution, encourage behaviour that helps cut air pollution and exposure to it and persuade all levels of government to take stronger action so that the UK complies fully with air quality law.

  3. The number of deaths attributable to long-term exposure to air pollution have been calculated by Public Health England in 2014 - https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/332854/PHE_CRCE_010.pdf
