Statement from Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter on the refugee crisis - 03/09/15
This is a desperately sad situation. David Cameron can and must do more. Britain has a long tradition of providing sanctuary for those fleeing conflict and persecution abroad and it is very important that the Government doesn’t become paralysed by the politics of immigration.
I wrote to the Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond MP over a month ago about the issue of refugees displaced in Syria and Iraq (although the problem is bigger than that) and I am currently chasing a response. If you are a constituent and would like to see a copy, please get in touch.
I support Yvette Cooper’s proposals for resettling refugees by calling on every London borough, every city and every county council across the UK to rehouse 10 families. If every region played their part, this would open up 10,000 spaces for vulnerable refugees within a month.
Local authorities in the UK have already shown a willingness to provide support and welcome to refugees, and I am talking to Hammersmith & Fulham council and the GLA about what more could be done, for example under the City of Sanctuary initiative.
Mr Cameron is clearly out of step with the public on this issue and I will continue to raise my concerns with the Government.
