Stop the Hospital Closures

Reorganisation of the NHS is leading to damaging changes in healthcare in Hammersmith & Fulham. Our borough's population is rising and demand is increasing. Yet, under the planned changes, access to local emergency care will be drastically reduced.

  • Charing Cross Hospital will be demolished. Much of the site will be sold off to developers to pay for redevelopment of St Mary's and a lesser facility on the remaining land.
  • Hammersmith Hospital's A&E has closed.
  • Charing Cross A&E will be downgraded to an 'emergency centre' run by GPs. There will be no Emergency Medicine consultants on site. Consultants at other sites will provide advice by phone or video link.
  • Because Charing Cross will no longer have a top-tier A&E, its world-class stroke unit will be moved to St Mary's, Paddington.
  • Charing Cross will lose 336 of its 360 in-patient beds, 93% of the total.
  • People who suffer a stroke or who need emergency surgery will have to be taken to St Mary's Paddington instead of Charing Cross. For many, travel times will increase.
  • Travel times for families and carers of these patients will also increase and journeys and parking will be more difficult and more expensive.

We call for an immediate halt to further closures of hospital services in Hammersmith & Fulham, and a full review and public consultation on the future of our local NHS.

I don’t think people realise fully just how bad (and dangerous) the situation with our hospitals is becoming. The closure of more A&Es in west London is just the beginning, with even worse to come. The downgrading of Charing X and selling off of some of the site will be disastrous, especially since increased facilities at St Mary’s are not complete yet.. Northwick Park already can’t cope with the extra A&E demand, and it is too far for many of us to go. We need to wake up to the fact that we have paid into our NHS (many of us for decades, via NI contributions and tax) and now sadly the NHS is being taken apart by the Government. In 10 years time we could probably still be paying our contributions but find ourselves with no NHS and having to pay privately for all our healthcare, if we can afford it!

Are we moving towards discriminating against those who cannot afford to pay for private care in favour of those who can??It seems more and more likely!

Closure of Hammersmith Hospitals A&E will cause me problems as St Mary’s is too far away.

This is a great local hospital with fantastic facilities. My husband is currently undergoing hydro-therapy there following a spinal operation.

I needed to take my wife to hospital after a bad fall getting out of Bath. That meant getting a No 7 bus to St Mary’s Hospital Paddington. in stead of to Hammersmith Hospital. Du Cane Road. which is nearer to us. by the way My Wife is aged 69, and I am 72.. its totally Stupid

This closure will cost lives, who wants to travel to st Mary’s if you are feeling ill going by bus, train if by car where do you park? Charing CRoss has saved my mum and brothersmlives they can’t afford private treatments. The people who are closing this hospital don’t even live in this area why should have a say. What about the dedicated brushes and doctors porters cleaners losing there jobs,

It is shocking that the Trust are rushing through their decisions with limited public consultation. I attended the Trust meeting on 30th July and it was obvious that scant regard has been given to the needs of the local community.

NHS services south of the river will also be affected as Charing Cross A&E is walking distance from most of North Barnes because of the loop in the river

I’ve had an operation at the hospital and need to have another one soon. I don’t want to see it close.
